I was looking for the philosopher and would rather have Rennie in the only-way I would ever remember him: as Klaatu, but not a name - a space-man. I was not interested in the actor. It was the character - that-character. Why demean the character with droll commentary on acting-technique ? Even in this short-sighting, I could intuit he was-no Klaatu. How to approach him ? Hello Klaatu. I am Tom Stevens ? He seemed a nice guy, a little lost-maybe, 'a deer in the headlights', even if no-lights there.

The bipolars are Michael Rennie as (Klaatu) and Tom Stephens (Hugh Marlowe). Rennie is all-powerful through the auspices of his trusty robot (Gort) who can destroy the-world. Klaatu has come to save the-world from itself. Marlowe is the ambitious small-mind, who looks but does not play the part so-well in the eyes of his girlfriend, this honest-woman. I was Tom Stephens. Now of a sudden - and miraculous visitation, I am Klaatu. Out of the-ship, and in gestured-good friendship, the first thing they do is shoot-me. Think they call me Paranoid for Nothing ? It was a fifties-gift. So I go-into hiding. Obviously being who I am, the Mucky-Mucks must keep-me a-prisoner. They can't allow a higher-being than they, to transit-around in this real-world. I will be the ordinary-them, and live their ordinary-lives. But of-course there is a dragnet. I must be careful and not give-away my geo-galactic position. My power lies-yonder, like my monument-to-space - the flying-saucer, parked illegally on a DC baseball diamond; collecting great-white-grail scufflaws; and my standing-statue robot, all-power-ready, the destiny-destruct who bats a thousand. "The only language your people seem-to understand", said Klaatu.
