The day was 12 December. I was going to Naples to catch the ferry to Israel. I didn't know where I would be on Christmas. I thought I would try to go to Jerusalem. The ferry cost 50 dollars, and that's less than any other way I might have gone and so with the girls I took it. We took the train from Rome on Wednesday. Left from Naples Wednesday evening. Arrived Haifa on Sunday at 6 AM. The ship was Turkish and it was a good trip, although there were a thousand cockroaches in the cabins so the lights had to stay on all night, for otherwise in the dark - eeegad ! but it was quite al-right.
We left the Garden of Guessemnity aboard the ship Ourgoplot, not-leaving from anywhere nears the Themes River. The boat was cockroach ingested, vaporess and that was our Lot of Harpies, thru-in and new-out, my first big-boat travel. Everywhere below, like the inside of a citifried-kitchen, with creepy-crawly roaches slithering away on the walls. Never thought-much of the Navy. I didn't like the-uniform. What am-I - a bell-hop? It was Ramadan for the Arabic crew. It was said they didn't eat, or something religious, for some number of days. The first thing I imagined, was the crew starved for food. Can that be done for forty days and forty nights ?
