The only way they were even noticeable was by geometric outlines of human structures. In fact the same could be said of most of Europe for that matter, especially in the south where all the buildings are colored in generally formalized earth tones and pastels, which is quite aesthetic; pastel browns and yellows and the Mediterranean aqua-blue, as the ambient light of all visionary surveil. Of course close to ocean and sea is a heavily vaporous and mellifluous air. Aesthetics seemed to be the rule, as opposed the American ethic - I'll paint my house any damn color I please, and I'll paint it black - just to prove I can. Of course for me these Mediterranean countries were pretty arid, dry, and desert like. I was from a more fertile environment with rich loam and thick un-blotted greenery everywhere.
We stayed in Lisbon four or five days. Lisbon was very nice but like state-side. The Portuguese are a very conservative lot - and got on our nerves with their rude gaping and staring. Portuagal was quite an experience. We would create a scene apparently everywhere we went in all the small towns. Everyone would stop and stare at us. The women wore mostly black bowler hats with bright colored shawls, which are more commonly associated with Bolivia. I liked the pomposity of the hat, especially on a beautiful woman. In fact I wore one myself in later days as a hippy. People would be hanging out of second story windows to gawk at us. Never did find out by actual conversation, what all the commotion was about. Was not sure if it was the scooter, something about my longish hair and bit of beard, or Allison and I together.
