Across the street were three buildings, the first the mini-headquarters for the admin unit to include the adjoining office of the Major and the second building supply, finance and ordinance HQs. And the third building was the bomb-disposal unit with post-office and movie theater, and an unused Quonset hut off to the side of the whole.

I was assigned to the administration unit of which Major Joinagain was commander. Actually I wasn't even supposed to get to Greece. First they told me that if I did not re-enlist, that my orders sending me there would be cancelled. Fat chance - so it was a surprise to me that just three weeks before my departure date, I was suddenly informed that I was transferred anyway. Then after Christmas leave while at Ft. Dix, New Jersey, the departure point for Europe, my orders were changed, and I was reassigned to Germany, because I did not have a high enough security clearance for my assigned unit in Greece. Germany was not a place I particularly wanted to go.

I was at Ft. Dix probably four days, waiting to get on a plane. They gave little work details to do all day, then late in the afternoon they put everyone in a big room, originally around 900 people, but dwindling everyday as they assigned flights, and hope they called your name for a flight out. The problem was a troop ship was coming in. If I didn't get called by Friday night, it was the troop carrier and at least a week at sea; and not a comfy civilian plane. Nobody wanted that. I got the second to the last plane. A typical army sweat-out.
