Event Analysis :
Analysis attempts to make what is unconscious conscious, wherein the individual can ascertain the validity of controls created in the past, and now forgotten. Reassessment of unconscious conditioning means the individual can produce the possibility of eliminating old controls and creating new ones, and thus can become more conscious of present circumstance and more responsible. One may examine one's conditioning in reference to, what is termed the Resident or present Identity.
The process elicits feelings and emotions associated to definitions, words, terms, ideas, values, and experience. Most thoughts, opinions and values are tied to emotions and feelings, having originated in the reality of real experience where sensory experience is strong. One remembers events in which information was learned and decisions were made, and elicits the feelings and emotions that may be involved. The process consists in the analysis of the sensory and emotional content of past experience in which decisions and automatic processes were originated.
An important tool is Event Analysis, in which one revisits the event in the memory, and examines it in terms of the feelings, emotions and the physical dynamics of the circumstance. This produces personal involvement in the problem in which the individual can examine the origins of beliefs, ideas, rules, behavior, habits, fears, tastes and propensities. Many times there is a conflict between the intellect and the feelings and emotions. One may be taught that hunting is right and proper and is the province of the original human instinctive being, which is pretty much agreed upon by most people the individual knows. But this argument may conflict with the way the individual feels about it.
Question hunt
What do I think about hunting? Hunt, shoot, kill, crime, pain, torture,
near kill someone, cruel. Tried it didn't like it.
After asking a particular question and eliciting associations concerning it, one should be led to memories of particular events relevant to the problem. One may be convinced by others to think that hunting is ok.
One may want to believe hunting is ok based upon social pressure and fear of ostracism concerning this particular subject or in general. Writing the question down and letting the associations flow, especially concerning one's feelings, brings up this distasteful event which may have been forgotten. With the conflict in the open, one can decide an exact position on the question of hunting. If the propensity before was to state automatically when asked, that one enjoyed hunting, now one may be certain they do not, and thus a decision is apparent in which one now has a number of choices. In this hypothetical case one can be honest and brave and state a dislike for hunting, or one can lie and say that they like it. In either case the decision is no longer automatic, and one possesses the ability to make the decision for oneself, as opposed to others having made it for one. Or maybe one really likes it.
If the individual has many unresolved and unconscious conflicts between intellectual premises and feelings and emotions, such as that described in Example hunting, this may cause an intellectual confusion and emotional tension. Such conflicts, can cause the individual an inability to think clearly, to be hesitant and halting in conversation with others, to be unsure of oneself, to feel intellectually deficient and emotionally stifled. The individual thinks one thing while unconscious and oppositional feelings are submerged below awareness. The individual does not have complete control, and may do things unconsciously to pacify submerged emotional tensions. For resolution the thinking must be changed or the feelings and emotions must be eliminated. This conflict is especially inherent in societies and cultures in which the feelings and emotions are considered aspects of the primitive natural organism and inferior to intellectual models of activity and behavior, which are based upon efficient motives and purposes such as idealized modes of activity and behavior. The problem that arises is whether one is to follow the dictates of the heart or mind.
