So they did another call to someone across the bay, who didn't seem to understand apparently, what they were calling about. So they made some meaningless chit chat until they had enough minutes for the required test. It was such a superficial display.

Then for the big call. He talked to his brother very excited and told stories that weren't true. He really put on the spread, lied and lied about how great he was doing and how great 'Frisco' was, even though it was obvious to me, they didn't know where there next meal was coming from. There were some hints of welfare but I wasn't sure about that. He made up a lot of stories how they were living on a hill in a beautiful apartment. About how he was working for a lawyer and even how they had been seeing famous people in the restaurants they frequented. He must have talked for twenty minutes or a half an hour --- a pretty hefty charge. Finally the good byes were wished and he began to feed his quarters --- one-ding, two-ding, three-ding, four-ding, five-ding ding ding --- They didn't come back !

Now they were in big trouble. He says to his wife, "It kept the coins", as if she wasn't standing right there. He was shocked and in a flustered state. He banged on the phone, pressed the coin return over and over. He hung up the phone. He had no money and they were honest and couldn't walk away from the phone.
