Did I know how ? Well I assumed that you just eye-balled the shingles so that they were nailed down in a straight line. Anyway
I didn't want to admit I didn't know if there was a right and wrong way. Looks straight to me, unknowing there was a means of specific alignment, the lower shingle aligned under the upper, and along about four thirty someone yells : the roofing is crooked just about the time the boss shows up. Well it didn't take long for them to realize the problem, which started about the time I got there. The roofing began trailing down, so they had to pull it all up and I was in the dog house, but he didn't fire me. My problem - I would pretend when I should have asked.
Back home in one winter, the septic-tank overflowed on the island, and it was determined that a ditch should be dug along that side of the house down to near the beach a distance of fifty sixty feet down hill, and then flat across the yard where two ditches were to intersect and would be dug across the front yard to near the other side property line - and I would dig it all.
The trenches were shallow, two feet deep up by the septic tank along the side of the house where the ground dropped-off into the front yard. And the transits beginning at that that two foot level were to become successively deeper across the yard to a depth of six feet at the property line or over my head.
