It was a difficult report because it was suppose to be perfect. The spelling had to be correct, the correct abbreviations used wherever possible, the information correct and no typing errors. Any typing error had to be struck through and initialed by the Major. I started at six AM, but was out of there by two. The job was a little over my head and I really wasn't all that interested anyway, but fortunately for me the Major didn't know a thing about it. The only thing he knew was if there were no typing errors it was perfect report, so the object was to submit a typing error-free report. Mostly my errors were due to omissions as information not filled in because I didn't have it. This generally involved new arrivals in which I got incomplete paper-work. Someone over at North Post would review my reports and others from the various posts in the DC area, and send make-up slips, where every couple of months I would do specials, which involved late night multiple page reports, which was absolutely nerve wracking. I began the job typing with ten fingers. After a day or two I was down to two finger typing.
The first thing I was told by the guy I was replacing, was in the form there was a place for a code, which controlled whether an individual would be eligible for assignment to some other location at any time, or would remain in DC for a full three years. He said I could surreptitiously change the code for certain individuals including myself, so they would be safe from reassignment, and maybe take a little gratuity for the service.
