To what extent these future expectations, as authorities for one's activity and conduct, dictate corresponding behavior, is relative to the type of expectations adopted. If the individual has no objectives or expectations for what the future should entail, then there is no necessity for any particular conduct in the present, which promotes such expectations. However necessities of one kind or another, must always be satisfied like hunger, health, warmth, shelter or bodily functions, that demand activity in present to maintain and produce these results.

Much of what is a part of present experience, has the potential to affect the future, like one should avoid sharp objects with bare feet because of the ramifications of injury. Thus the future, as an authority for the present is unavoidable.

Necessity and Subsistence

The more sophisticated, complicated and progressed the models of expectation are, the greater the degree of time and energy necessary to produce and maintain them, and the greater the number and demands upon the individual as conformance. Models of expectation that are limited to only what is essential are termed Necessity and Subsistence.

If the individual lives in nature by Necessity and Subsistence, such as hunter/gathering, then nature takes care of itself and does not need any promotion or maintenance. However if for instance, the domestication of animals is introduced, then there may need for fences to be built and the cultivation of crops for animal feed, fixed shelters for both humans and livestock, and it may be necessary to defend the land against marauders. The models of expectation may still be modest but have become more complicated and demanding.
