The non-financial state of mind is what the individual does and how they live
separate from the 'for money' state of mind. The Minimalist lifestyle is not for the money, but for the purpose of creating time. Time can be used for whatever the individual deems as satisfactory. From this perspective, life is time and the
activity of living it. If the individual can get paid for doing what they think their
time is worth as full employment, well and good. Otherwise the individual can
use time for the purposes of education, hobbies, family, charity or political and ecological activism. For this person the use of time is more important than the accumulation of money and the things it can buy. Time is the activity of living in the present. The way this time is used can be considered as the degree to which the individual can determine its worth. And its worth will depend upon the individual's set of values.
Getting along with a limited amount of money can be an art form, and one may
have to learn what is involved and how to go about it. Probably the biggest
expense is rent, depending on where one lives. One can avoid rent by
homelessness or living in a van. However both of these options are quite inconvenient and in the first instance can be dangerous. Cheap rent is the next option and is most often found in low income neighborhoods. Used to be, in America at least, that there were a very many cheap boarding houses that served the needs of the less than ambitious and otherwise less capable. However these are mostly gone now replaced by high rent development. Cheap rooms for the singular individual may be had with some difficulty. Another option is part-time work with rent included such as housing management.
Another means of cheap rent is the cohabitation with as many people as the landlord will allow, and that is practical. In this case the cohabitants have to
know how to get along with as little friction as possible. An advantage in this regard, is if all those involved are pursuing the same objectives, such as environmental or political activism. In this case the ability to coexist is an
inherent aspect of the mission. If in an ordinary job situation there are conflicts and personal politics, people in general get along because they have to work together.
