This was an unincorporated town. Was the fence on the road or was the road that wide ? Who owned what ? But should this park-lot, being the only access to the abridged island be private or should it be public ? Apparently Gunner was a socialist.

There was nowhere else to park, but maybe a half mile away, the access road narrow and wooded on either side. My grandfather's case: I am the rich guy here. You can use my property for free. Gunner had to use it, he had no choice.

Does he have to use a boat ? Can you believe they actually had that service at one time, before the great war, a non-winter water-taxi. So lets get to the bare tacks. I own this land. I got a deed. I could with a shot gun prevent you from using it. But I'm a nice guy; I'm a Christian. They thought the two synonymous. You get to use it for free and all I want is - "don't park in my parking space". Is that too much too ask ? It was. Gunner had to park in that space or room for a dozen cars.

Of course there was an earlier instance. Big fight down by the boat house and they were all such great friends before my father told Gunner's kid to quit shooting blackbirds and my father hit gunner who had a judge swear out peace bond of a forfeited thousand dollars if my father hit him again.

It was a cold-war after that. Nobody spoke for years. His wife was nice and she liked me. She wanted to be friendly, but was caught in a loyalty snare between her husband and myself, and she lived with him and not with me.
