However in the case of Charity, it is always the fishes that will be given, but never the pole. They own it. Much of this conflict is over the pole, as a synonym for communism, socialism, labor unions, co-operatives and community based power.

The least Compassionate of all are the Ideologues, who operate by intellectual formula, rather than from empirical evidence, primarily because they are too dumb, more often by ideology than defect, to think for themselves. This inability of independent thinking is also the inability of Compassion. Ideology is mandates for human behavior based upon abstract principle without necessarily the considerations for the very many complications and states of mind that accord to the many facets of the human condition. Compassion for the religious materialist is reserved for their own and not much for the infidel.

Compassion is one of the primary tenants of Buddhism, as the way humankind in general should conduct their lives in terms of ethical behavior, not only an affinity and compassion for other humans, but for all living things in general. The concept of compassion in the west, particularly as Christian doctrine, is pretty much limited to humankind. It stresses conduct towards other people but does not address what is essential to a true sense of compassion. True compassion can only come from a complete understanding of others.
