ETHICS & MORALITY

The problem of Ethics and Morality initially arises from the physical constitution of every living entity, as the necessity to continuously replace energy lost, as anything from calories consumed to heat dissipated, in the activity & behavior of existence. This requires the transformation or destruction of specific elements of the entity's environment, which are converted into energy for its continued existence. Every living thing, in the natural planetary ecology except humankind, is limited to the replacement of energy consumed in the activity of living, as only what is required, or Necessity & Subsistence, by virtue of the inability to create excess.

The consideration of human conduct is at its root, the necessity to use elements of the natural world termed the Given Existence, for human survival, wherein everything needed is something already existing. If any or all elements of the pre-existent natural world are sacred, then the individual is limited to what is essential. If what is pre-existent, has no inherent value in and of itself, then it may be used, not only for necessity, but for every excess that can be created.

Every alternative to any given circumstance, requires the alteration of something already existent. Ethics and Morality are defined here, as concerning the problem of the value of pre-existent states transformed or destroyed, as compared to changed states resulting from the alteration, when choice is involved, as the ability of volition. The term ethics is used here to represent the codes of human conduct, when the Given Existence is interpreted to possess inherent consequence. The term morality is used here to represent the standards of human conduct, which are required, when the Given Existence is interpreted as possessing no inherent consequence, in and of itself.
