If I want to understand my audience then I have to understand all those different levels, and have lived them if possible, at least theater-wise.

Well levels are like knowledge base - what do you know ? Kids don't know much. It is a level. Interacting with a lot of people, one may come to understand varying degrees of their understanding. Not hard just ask questions and find out what people know. If I was back there in the land of Lincoln, I could get into that. I am usually where I am, and because it is where I am, I might as well be there and like it. And I do. It is mostly the ambiance of the weather, feeling, atmosphere, aesthetics, as much as the people. But then it is also levels of consciousness as may come with the territory. And certainly the experience is enhanced if one shares the same level as those one associates. If I was there I would know what those people know. Been there done that. But somebody got to be there. I am just a tourist; I move on. I was a hippie/artist/scientist/tourist.

The Professor was the king - Zeus, and he sure played the part, especially the party part. The psychology of soldiers might be everyone is a potential enemy, so keep a rigid demeanor and don't give away any signals. The psychology of sailors is the opposite. Everyone a friend and so signal away. "I've got stories to tell, come one, come all". The Professor was a sailor there as well. He not only told his stories, but he acted them as well with complete exuberance.
