Wow ! We were killed if the fence hadn't held ! We were sold ! This was great and we came most every week after that. But never sat in the first row again. The fence had a 3 foot square hole in it about 2 feet from the top. We usually sat fairly high up in the stands after that.
But the real reason we became avid stock car racing fans was to watch Mouse Melius. The owner and driver of this car's last name was Melius and he had an image of Mighty Mouse with dice as a logo on the side of his car, so we called him Mouse Melius. He ran souped up 327 fuel injected Chevy engines. What we went to watch though, for most of two seasons, was his left front wheel. He ran
a tire as large as his rear tires on the right front side huge, and a very small tire on the front left.
The suspension on this car was set so that the left front tire would come off the ground as much as 2 feet. The cars ran counter clock-wise of course, and the centrifugal force was to the right. By the tire on the left lifting, it would shift more weight onto the right, and thus give the car better traction, better than any other car in competition. No other car had it, and I have never seen it since. A lot of people may have come for the noise, the smell of gas and nitro, the competition or for the accidents. But we came for the levitating wheel.
