I started hanging out at the Cafe Commons at the bottom of the hill on Mission Street. I thought it might be a way to get work. Was doing the Advertiser which was fairly iffy. Me and Randy took a job once out of the Advertiser, and we had to demand the employer pay us in the morning, before we started work, because we couldn't trust him to pay us after. This was in the Republican eighties, the era of flipping real estate. I did get a great job out of the Advertiser one time, in which I worked for this single couple off and on over a period of fifteen years. And from the cafe I got a job lasting at least seven years from Ray. These were jobs of duration on average of from three to six week remodels, with occasionally a day or two in-between. That would give me enough money to pursue my sculpture full time.

I got a stint working at Stanford from the cafe also. It was summers and winter semester breaks for maybe three years. Actually it was the Professor who got the job from a woman who was then frequenting the cafe. She had just gotten the job of building maintenance supervisor, and needed a patcher and painter.
