However that does not necessarily mean it was not raining by sleep time, but only a few times. My sleeping bag was an army down. I slept in it even in temperatures down to thirty degrees in only my underwear, which was a rule. In retrospect it was probably a foolish mandate since I got a touch of Bursitis from this practice.

My second day I continued along the coast in France to Nice, and then headed north. I passed through Livorno, Pisa, Massa, La Spezia, Genoa, Savona, and camped somewhere around Imperia. Quoting from my letter : "The mountains between La Spezia and Genoa were beautiful. I am having the time of my life. The weather was perfect but a little windy Thursday evening. I stayed on SS1 Aurelia all the way to Nice except that I mistakenly got onto an autostat in Genoa. It was a hairy experience. I should never have got on that road. It was very windy and a high speed toll road. The scooter is so light that the wind blew me all over road and I thought sometimes I might be blown out to sea or into a semi-truck. There was no way off the damn thing. I had to ride it out to Savona hanging on for dear life."

I had thought this happened in the autumn when I was heading back to Rome. The wind was so strong that it would blow me toward the center of the road into the fast traffic lane where cars and trucks were clipping along from behind me at high speed. It was Russian roulette. I do remember stopping and trying to find a way down off this death stretch, even if I had to slide the scooter down.
