But it was too steep everywhere. If the wind had hit me at the right moment, I would have been blown into the path of pursuing annihilation. So I was fortunate, for whenever it happened no traffic was behind. Another fortunate thing was the Autostat was only about thirty kilometres long when I could get off - thankful to be alive.
The coastal common road was windy bad too, and when it got dark I took the first side road and slept in a small valley sheltered from the wind. Friday was another beautiful sunny day and I made Imperia, Sanremo and Ventimiglia the frontier. I went thru customs and made Menton, Monte Carlo, Monaco and Nice. The country was beautiful all the way.
I was still in love with Roma and broke away from it psychologically when I hit the mountains of southern France.
Italy into France was my first border crossing checkpoint on my scooter. In my room the last few weeks in the army, I made a carry pouch for money, passport, travellers checks and whatnot. I decided I would carry it under my left arm, just below my arm pit. I would have to be knocked down and disrobed to be robbed. I made it from an old pair of green Levis shaped like a pocket, with a sewn in zipper on top, and a strap to go around my neck. When I needed to produce my passport, or when standing in line at a bank or American Express, I would unbutton my shirt reach in and slide it around a little, unzip it and pull out what I needed.
