If it is assumed that spiritual or non-physical mystical dimensions are the opposite of the physical plane, then there is a polarity between the physical and spiritual realms, wherein conditions of existence would be fundamentally opposite as well. Some of the attributes commonly associated with the spiritual or non-physical planes are eternal duration of being and spirit, the absence of time and change, a stability of environmental conditions that are completely compatible with spiritual being, and the absence of all negative wants, desires, emotions and feelings.

Conjectures concerning the relationship between the physical and non-physical realms are extant. The most common is probably the belief that the physical existence lies between two non-physical poles of heaven and hell, each of which are concentrated but diametric opposites. Another is a progressive idea of reincarnation in which physical existence is said to be a vehicle to advanced consciousness and ultimately to a state transcendent from reincarnation itself. In terms of the concept that the physical plane is the sphere of the inanimate while the spiritual realm is the domain of the animate, elements of each contained in each other, several ideas might follow. That eternal spirit needs refuge and rest from an everlasting condition, which is found in the short term consciousness of physical existence.

There is also the idea that short term consciousness and memory can be said to produce a more intense and real experience. If being in more than one place at one time is thought of as akin to all encompassing consciousness, then it is like not being in any single place completely.
