These two conditions are intensely opposite in terms of the physical properties they exhibit, but at the same time they are complimentary in the sense that in specific spatial relations, such as the earth's orbit around the sun, a more or less ideal condition of living existence is produced. In terms of the Human Sensory Apparatus, all sensation and feeling is the sensory contrast between opposites such as cold & hot, sweet & sour, hard & soft or light & dark. Every physical entity possesses specific structure of composition that provides for its stable existence through its span of duration. Because different entities have different compositions, such as the difference between fish and rocks, for living creatures that are mobile, there exists the duality between right and wrong activity and behavior. Where volition is involved, right and wrong can become the duality of good and evil.
Duality has emerged in the analysis undertaken here called the theory of
Any Age Authority,
that is a dichotomy between what is termed
Progressive Materialism and
Conservative Spirituality, or between what is termed Mundane and Symbolic Consciousness.
In some eastern spiritual traditions such as Buddhism, the object of spiritual consciousness is to transcend duality. This objective may be synonymous with what is called the achievement of the state of
Enlightenment, which is the perspective and realization that all things and all duality are the bipolar and diverse aspects of one single unified entity. The conceptual unification with this entity, is the absence of association or comparative states, since for a single unified entity there would be nothing outside itself as a means of comparison. The transcendence of duality in terms of the human perspective would involve a change of thinking. Opposition in general would not be thought of as antagonistic but as
Complimentary.
