If I paid with the left, he would be indignant and hand back change displeased if not downright scornful with his left hand. If with the right he would be gracious and hand change back with the right hand. I did control tests with other Palestinian shop owners and found it to be the same. They did not respect people who did not know the difference. Of course they were old world, but still it was a formality that I was heretofore unconscious, and as such felt like a fool for having been so ignorant.
As a generality it was an ignorance of convention, and of course different people from different cultures would have different conventions. I was assuming there was universal convention. I should know what it was. And because I did not and was oblivious, I felt a fool.
Selective sensing, as seeing and hearing, took the form of random sequence, in which specific corollaries as generalities like hats, I interpreted by sequence of observation, independent of all other context. When out and about the city, observation took the form of specific attributes in sequence, such as color, numbers, names, categorical simplicities like very short or tall people, shapes, designs, snatches of the conversations, the performance of strangers and such. A particular attribute was established as a theme. The theme was a context for interpretation, as some attribute whereby other similar attributes observed in some sequential order would be compared. The result was that I would interpret specific attributes in contexts that I would never ever otherwise do, and the source of this context formation was completely random. The mundane world became communicative, of which it was to be understood by symbols as script.
