Many other countries don't and do not do it that way - proprieties be damned. This is my own interpretation. I had to reverse my brain. You had to do it. If you did not, you could get quashed.

One time I was ascending a long up-sloping road in green country plain, and nearing the top, a police car suddenly appeared from over the ridge - was on my side of the road - coming right at me. I had forgotten apparently when I had returned to the road some little distance back, to drive on the left. I swerved left to be on the right side of the road. He swerved to his left, but stayed on the pavement. He shook his head with his helmet-on in the car and went on by me. I gave him the - 'what me worry', sorry gesture of forgot - I am an idiot tourist, and he kept going.

I decided to go with feelings as another avenue of understanding. Now totally submersed in European ambiance, in its purest form with no history, the feeling of the land and innate energies, like getting the feeling of people, seeing the geometry without preconceived premises, seeing human structures not as what their intended purpose was, but what they were now as a portrait. It had no specific history. You could make your own, and of gremlins and goblin wars, or any context you might like to paint, and daub it now, whatever reveries might spring to mind, like English lawn and Irish fairy-tales.

Today from Gainsborough I went near Scunthorpe and into Goole the back way. I have just been asking directions for good routes thru the English countryside - scenic routes.
