It's physics. You learn how to control the instrument of animation, in the elements of air, water, snow, ice, wind, sun, rain and storm. You learn reactions in every situation and circumstance. You learn what it is to suppose, and what it has to do - simple physicality. You learn What from Whatnot.
From Londonderry I went on-through to Donegal, Ballyshannon, Balleysadar to Collooney. Just out of Londonderry was the frontier, separating Northern from Southern Ireland. It was my first militarized border. It was something of a shock. I remember they gave some Germans in front of me, a hard time. They gave Germans a hard time everywhere. "Everybody out. Open the trunk. Everything out. Open up everything. Take it out." Make a mess. Make them put it all back. World War II ! don't you know. Me - they waved on by. They just took a glance at my passport and passed me through. Might have been because my passport picture was taken with my service jacket on. Had no idea that photo-sitting would affect my travels, never thought of it - but it did.
The frontier - Northern and Southern Ireland, a little west of Londonderry. The war of the North and the South - American civil war and so much history. I went from one to the other, crossed the Rubicon from North to South Ireland, and I didn't know the difference. Am I an Idiot ? The fences and guns were real enough. I became plagued by the problem. Even three years in the army and I did not get the reality of it.
Whatwas and Whatnot. There was apparently a difference between the two sides, but I had missed it. Didn't have a clue.
Whatwas our side and Whatnot their side. No not them. Well there was wind in the north, but then again, the-wind may have been in the south - for-all I can remember.
