He bought me a steak dinner aboard the ferry, the first real cooked meal I had in three weeks.
Monday night I slept just out of Dover by the roadside. The night was clear and warm. Next morning I made Canterbury and London and was lost all morning. I landed at Sussex Gardens and Edgeware in London, right on the edge of Hyde Park, actually more in between Hyde Park and Regent's Park. I found the English to be very friendly and courteous, more so than anywhere else I have been.
After a week on the cold April road, I took some long hot baths at the bed and breakfast I was staying. I slept late and was the last one in the dining room in the morning. The breakfasts were mostly cafe latte and scones. But there was a young Irish lady who worked in the kitchen and she would get me extra stuff. She gave me her address in Ireland, on the north-west coast, but I didn't stop when I went thru there later in the summer. She may still have been in London, but I didn't want to take a chance and get involved.
I stayed in London probably a week. The trip was a waste. My gear did not arrive at the American embassy. After buying the scooter in Rome, the only reason that I came to London was to get my gear. I should have stayed in Italy and went to Spain. I went to the American Embassy to get my mail and no package. The camera, tent, shoes, boots, jacket and all sorts of things were sent to DC.
