Somewhere in these mountains I pulled off the road. Whether it was after dark, or I couldn't tell a weed from a grain - I am not sure. I thought I pulled off and camped in a field of weeds. When I awoke in the morning, the field had been mowed, except for a large area around my encampment. They didn't even wake me up. About a half dozen farm workers with scythes were on the other side of the now mowed tillage, and looked to be about finished. They had a horse drawn wagon with rubber tires, piled with what may have been hay. What an amazing thing. I remember thinking, I would probably have been shot in America or at least thrown in jail. My God - how civilized these people were. I didn't bother about anything but dressing and packing as fast as I could, and getting out of there, so they could finish their work. I left with a wave.

Monday I went all the way to Madrid by way of Calahorra, Armdo, Sorra, Ammazan, Medianaceli, Algora, Guaduhajara, Aledla d.h. and Madrid. I had found a camping place about 8 kilometres from the center of Madrid. Hot showers, bar, store and swimming pool for 43 cents a night pretty good. I came to Spain for the sun and it rained the last 70 kilometres into Madrid. The past two days the weather had been perfect and I had gone down-town and just sat in the sun and read. That's what I came to do. I had not gone to all the tourist attractions, neither in London. It becomes an obligation and a rat race. Then as well I am alone, and touristing is not so much fun by oneself. I was trying to correct this. I had met a girl who maybe would travel with me. I did not know.
