Sunday turned out in mid-morning to be sunny and warm, clear and great. I spent a pleasant day driving through French farmland, great flat land and rolling hills. I passed thru Chagny and then to Dijon and head for Troyes. I passed near Romilly, went thru Anglure, Sezanne, Montmirail and up to Soissons. By that way, I went Dijon to Troyes by way of Aisey, Chatillon -S-S, Gye Bor-S-S. There are a very many small towns between the points I name. I am only outlining the route. I am taking more or less travelled roads, rather the main travelling highways.
Sunday night I camped in a public ground in Soissons. I made a fire and boiled a pot of water and drank tea, a whole pot of tea. It was great. Everything is great. Monday morning is again cold, damp and cloudy. I made Chauny and stop for coffee. The Frenchman who serves me coffee, writes out the way to Calais. He makes a to-do about my trip. He is very good. Of course he does not speak English but we get on anyway. I have two cups of coffee to warm up.
Later in the morning the sun comes out and it again turns into a wonderful day and I am singing for the sunshine. I make Ham, Peronne, Bapaume, Arras, Lievin, Bethume, St. Omer and Calais by three o'clock. In Calais they say there are no ferries leaving today, but to go to Dunkirk and there is a ferry leaving at five. I arrive in Dunkirk by four and make the ferry to Dover arriving at nine-thirty Monday evening. On the ferry I met a Canadian school teacher who thought I was an interesting character.
