However I had already learned the practice of character anonymity by my inability to understand what people were saying when in Europe. Now I could give them fame, fortune, power, whatever attributes I wanted, as contexts of what I was studying. Thus I created multitudinous perspectives, and walking the streets quite often or Golden Gate Park sometimes, I could do identity impersonations and identifications at random, and with no seeming rhyme or reason.

Each character was an interpretation, and how many characters could there be ? The fundamental characters identities, I had to reduced down to a manageable number. This I did by commonalities of the contexts of objectives. All characters possessing the same objectives became a single all-inclusive character. There is the navy guy in his uniform. All navy people would have a commonality of objectives as boats, water, sea-faring, oceans, sea and salt, storms, merchant marines, submarines, military and cruise ships, sextants, the endless horizon, sea-sick, an uncle was in the Navy, etc. It's all about boats and understanding all the various aspects of vessels and ships.

San Francisco was a port town. Ford and I and maybe his girlfriend or whoever, liked for a time, to drive down along the south bay wharves, over around Mission Rock, along towards midnight. There were places where we could easily see the ships in dry dock close up, the cranes and structural framing supporting the operations. The geometric shapes were illuminated by the dry dock lights. Sometimes there was welding, with bright illuminated spark streams flying in the night darkness.

The geometrical shapes, outlines and decaying port architecture may have been of some influence in my sculpture, but in the end not a good one.
