A distinction is drawn between what is termed the Positive Dimension, which
is every sensation that is experienced by the
Human Sensory Apparatus, and the memory, which is termed the Negative Dimension.
The concepts of the Positive and Negative Dimensions, are created to
illustrate the difference between the interpretation of experience, as the
affect of the memory or association,
upon present experience. The first experience of the flavor of a foreign food,
should be absent the affect of association because it is new, but knowledge
of the country of its origin may affect the taste of it, as the individual who
was sure that any food originating from communist countries tasted bad.
Association in the memory, affects and may dictate, a person's conduct in a present circumstance, which is appropriate and necessary, for the quick and proper recognition, and instantaneous reaction to every possibility of danger
and imperilment. Association from the memory, which affects the conduct of
the individual, in the present circumstance as automatic response, is termed conditioning, for example the automatic fright at the sight of a snake, or
the feeling of nausea by the observation of blood.
Association as conditioning, causes the individual to react in specific ways,
to particular circumstance. Much conditioning derives from early childhood,
from the environment, culture, institutions and family, at a time when the individual
cannot choose or assess the correctness of what is being
conditioned. Conditioning may affect the person's perception and reactions
to circumstance for a life-time. Perhaps it is helpful, if the individual can
distinguish between an independent assessment and reaction, and the
affects of conditioning, upon the experience of present circumstance.
