In the grocery line not that long ago, I met a couple. He was eighty. We had some good conversation waiting in line. When she was paying with her check book and he was bagging their groceries, I went over to him and said, how did you get such a great woman? He said she was a keeper. Said that a couple of times. I went back to the line and asked her how did this guy get such a great woman? She
said it was the sports car. And he quipped in, "I still have a sports car".
The physician said he was going to go fishing again. I said good I want to flirt with your wife. He got very upset. He went ballistic. Got very loud. Probably
could hear him across the lake. I have never in my life perhaps, seen a display
such as this. She tried to restrain him, but to no avail. I couldn't believe he took that seriously. He started with: "She is my wife; you can't flirt with her". Must say his visible emotion did not so much match all the noise he was making. I am guessing this is some kind of act of expectation which of course is all about
him, and the way he is suppose to react to this dastardly affront. I penetrated his verbal fit of perturbation and got him to shake my hand, which was all out of character for this performance; said goodbye, and skipped across the creek.
He had no compunction in continuing his rant to his wife. Would seem to me
she don't count for much. Well I asked a question. Get an answer.
Earlier there were some statements made to the affect of some concern for
the respect the culture of India. Almost anybody might say especially liberals, that I affronted his culture. Well I would respect his culture if I was in India. He is now in my culture. And apparently he has no respect whatsoever for that. Like it is all about him; it must also be all about his culture.
Chris and I discussed the understanding of things. I try to figure things out and explain them. He said you can't explain spiritual experience. It is just experience.
I said that is what I do. "Why do you have to explain everything - you can't do it?" My thing is to understand and explain things, and more than that, to try to explain the unexplainable. I learn things that others don't, and to share it with others, I have to be able to explain it. But further I love to understand things. I like to figure things out. But more - by trying to explain things to others, I learn how well I understand things myself. If I cannot explain easily, I think I understand but I don't. I learn how well I understand things or if I understand
at all.
Chris expressed his opinion again that I over-emphasize explanation. Well I didn't say then, but I say now that to love you have to appreciate. To appreciate you have to understand how things work. If you love, you want to know how everything happens. To understand you notice and apprehend. To love you have to be interested, and being in love should make one interested. If you do not notice and pay no attention, you are not in love and do not care. Maybe to want to understand is love.
