There are no third parties because big money controls the mass capitalist media and the duopolistic parties. Traditionally the duopolistic parties represent the Capitalist big money property owners and little money labor. Unlike most other places in the world where the governments are parliamentary, parties are awarded seats based upon numbers polled. However in a truly Capitalistic system as the American is, rule is Winner Take All, or the loser even if getting 49% of the vote, gets no seat. Big money gets it all.
So of course the winner, with the loser locked out of government, has all the advantage of legislating for big money, building an unbeatable electoral war chest. So politicians die of old age in office half-senile, and held up-right vertical with drugs.
What can the little person do. Speak to small groups of people and collect small money donations. What do big person's do ? Buy million dollar ad campaigns, and of course with their big-money spending, are favorites with the corporate Capitalist mass evil media. It would seem that a proper election would be based upon ideas and not money. Well Capitalist Democratic elections definitely promote ideas, although I doubt there has ever been an intellectual elected to anything but a librarian. But the candidates do not say, I will represent to best of my ability millionaire and billionaires, which is what they will do when elected.
