The media of
Democratic Socialism means here that the media is owned by the government
which is democratically elected. The intended purpose of the media is
to serve the purposes of the community and society as whole. It is
non-profit and is funded by universal subscription as a compulsory tax. It
exists independent of advertising, which means that the control of content
is independent of profit motive and advertiser perspectives. It is also independent of the perspectives of private operators, who control content
so as to conform to their own perspectives, such as religious stations or all
right wing talk. Control of content comes from the government itself, in the
form of various means of the selection of boards and committees, which is
to insure an independence from the government itself. The Directing Instruments of socialist media should be composed of independent boards protected from the pressures of politicians and other special interest groups,
for the what it believes would be in the best interest of the audience and the preferences of the community. However like private operators, socialist media is not always exempt from the pressures of politicians. When the controlling instrument acts on behalf of the community, it selects perspective, information and programing that it thinks the constituency would want to know or that would further the good of the community as a whole. Socialist media is more often than not a mix of government and privately owned and produced media.
Socialist media also can be operated and financed through local organizations such as public schools and private foundations by means of voluntary subscription. Public school media may be financed as some mix
of educational taxes, voluntary subscription and advertising. Members of
the general public may support the programing by subscribing to the organization, generally for some limited period of time.
The control of information in authoritarian governments may use very
unethical methods such as deceit, lying, revision, slander, demonization,
or disinformation and Propaganda.
The more a particular authoritarian society is closed off from outside sources
of information, the more overt the control of media may be.
