Much of what is a part of present experience has the potential to affect the future, like one should avoid sharp objects with bare feet because of the ramifications of injury. Thus the future as an authority for the present is unavoidable.

The more sophisticated, complicated and progressed the models of expectation are, the greater the degree of time and energy necessary to produce and maintain them, and the greater the number and demands upon the individual as conformance. Models of expectation that are limited to only what is essential are termed Necessity and Subsistence.

If the individual lives in nature by Necessity and Subsistence such as hunter/gathering, then nature takes care of itself and does not need any promotion or maintenance. However if for instance the domestication of animals is introduced, then there may need for fences to be built and the cultivation of crops for animal feed, fixed shelters for both humans and livestock, and it may be necessary to defend the land against marauders. The models of expectation may still be modest but have become more complicated and demanding.

Models of expectation represent authority for activity and behavior as objectives that are necessary for existence, comfort and well being, such as simple survival or modern living. Authoritarianism is wherein models of expectation are considered more important than the personal wishes of individuals. Authoritarianism represents the demand by specific individuals and groups that others conform to models of expectation for the purpose of promoting specific objectives and forms. When models of expectation conform to the preservation of original and existing states and conditions such as that of the natural world in its original and pristine condition, or to preserve existing cultural and social orders, this is defined as Conservative Authoritarianism.
